Nowdays, i’m sure you all know that Google has the largest share of the search market, but why is that?? With the many other free products they supply (Gmail) and the Firefox integration it’s hard to ignore, but it’s really down to the fact their search is the best. Since the inception of PageRank in 1997, they have spent over a decade tweaking their search algorithm, adding ’signals’ to look for and updating the way it indexes. This constant innovation means they are now way ahead of competitors such as Bing, but are there any advantages of using these other, less efficient, search engines? From a search engine marketing point of view, it may be that SEO tactics that have been rendered obsolete by recent Google updates will work well on ranking pages in other search engines. For instance, it might be worth making two sites, then keeping one for long term organic link building on Google, whilst using aggressive tactics to gain quick results on Bing/Yahoo. I have compiled a quick comparison between Google and the rest
Google.com
- One of the most advanced and long running search engines
- Trusts old pages, maybe too much
- Depth of crawling determined by link quality and quantity
- Good filters for keyword stuffing, text and anchor text variation important
- Looks for natural long term link growth
- Heavy informational resource bias
- Duplicate contant filters are excellent (and punished severely)
- Very old or trusted pages or subdomains can rank better than they should with few links

Bing (now also powering Yahoo, AltaVista)
- Not good at seeing if links are natural or atificial
- Lots of weight placed on page content
- Easier to rank with new sites (opposite of Google)
- Spam type linking still works
- Commercial results bias (quite heavy)

Unfortunately, the search engine market isn’t what it used to be. Several years ago Yahoo purchased AltaVista, and now Bing has struck a deal to provide both their results. So with the dominance of Google, and now the conglomeration of the smaller search engines, it only really leaves Google and Bing. Currently, Google accounts for nearly 63% of the market, with Bing and Bing-powered sites taking around 32% and the other a paltry 5% between them. Bing and Yahoo have picked up some ground recently, but for the moment, ’search engine optimisation’ actually means ‘Google optimisation’, and this in turn should influence the entire web design and marketing process.

The net is a very active sphere, one moment something is popular then the next instant its not. Currently there are three major search engines in the mix, they are Google, Yahoo and Bing and Twitter is also very much on the rise. So where will these major players be in a decade from now? Let us take a quick look at this and have a prediction.

Google

Currently the big daddy of them all Google has more then 80% of the entire search market in its hands. But as of late it really seems that the company just do not have the push. They seem to be concentrating a lot more on getting into other markets such as mobile phones and operational systems. In around ten years time Google may well be knocked off of their rest.

Bing

The Microsoft search engine is doing some boastful things. As well as rebranding themselves, Microsoft are also going to be joining forces with Yahoo and powering their search, as well as getting access to Yahoos technology and algo. We all know that Yahoo know how to analyse natural links and natural citations a lot better then Bing. So the two joining up may make them a force to be reckoned with, especially with the money that Microsoft could be putting into it.

Yahoo

Yahoos search engineering and engineers will exist on but the results look to be taken over by Bing. The two could end up being a real headache for Google.

Twitter

The new site on the block. Twitter has spread an enourmous amount and has recently had a new homepage design, which looks like they are going to become a real time search engine. Can it succeed? Yes probably, but people want to begin seeing actually real sites not just conversations. So either Twitter will have to learn to grow and actually crawl, list and rank sites or end up being some other sociable has been.

For the best SEO and great Web Design

For so long a immense number of webmasters and SEOs have been only optimising their web site for Google, Google has basically been the king when it comes to driving traffic and getting top organic rankings for your company could potentially earn you a lot of revenue and exposure.

The two other big names in the search world have been Yahoo and Microsoft, but no one has really taken the effort to actually optimise their sites for these because there is simply not enough benefits.

The recent announcement that Bing will be powering all of Yahoos searches and be able to access their engineering science is going to shape the SEO industry up in so many dissimilar ways then before.

I know a lot of people are saying that Yahoo only has a low portion of searches at any rate and that it will not really affect Google. But what you really have to look at is the bigger picture, I mean we have already seen Microsoft launch a million dollar advertising campaign for Bing.

But what is actually the most interesting thing is what Microsoft is actually going to get out of this all, they will be able to use Yahoo’s technology. Now we are all aware that Microsoft are terrible at analysing links and natural citations, so having aid from Yahoo and pushing with the million dollars of advertising budget with definatley help take some of Google’s market share.

It would be a shame if you are not currently optimising sites for Bing, as its not currently that competitive. Concentrate on things such keyword density in the title, content and structure. For some sites that maybe getting quite a bit of traffic from Yahoo, the switchover may well see you lose some valuable traffic, especially if you do not begin optimising your site(s) for Bing.

For some of the most outstanding web design

Google have for so long been the number one ultimate force in the earth of search, over the past decade the company have grown from strength to strength and earned themselves billions of pounds in the mix.

No other search engine has really been able to come close to Google simply because of the technology and market share that the company have. But that could all be changing soon as the announcement that Bing owned by Microsoft will be buying out Yahoo, the second largest search engine in the world.

But how could this joining of forces change SEO? Let us take a quick prediction. We all know that Yahoo are so much more better at analysing link patterns and citations then Microsoft are. So what this unification will do is grant Microsoft to have admittance to Yahoos technology and algo. Bing will be powering all of the Yahoo search results in the future. But until Bing do decide to implement Yahoo’s technology it could leave a lot of businesses out in the cold?

We all know that the Bing search results are just not very good. So what could potentially happen is that a lot of traffic that comes from Yahoo could be wiped out in quick session, giving unknown sites that extra piece of coverage.

But I believe that once the Bing has Yahoos technology in place and both companies come up with new technology then Google should be getting very scared. I mean Yahoo really do have brains behind their engine and with the money that Microsoft have the joint company will be able to push forwards. And now is exactly the best time to do so as Google seem to be interested in other markets such as creating operating systems, and some of their search results do seem bad.
